King statement on Indiana's settlement with Meta to mandate social media protections for young Hoosiers
Note to Press – State Rep. Joanna King (R-Middlebury) issued the following statement in response to the Indiana Attorney General's announcement that Indiana and other states reached a settlement with Meta Platforms, Inc., to pay the state up to $419 million and implement safety reforms for children on Facebook and Instagram. King co-authored a new law during the 2026 legislative session that creates a framework to protect minors on social media, including parental consent for children under age 16 to open accounts and restrictions on harmful features.
STATEHOUSE (Aug. 27, 2026) – "Today is a historic win for Hoosiers and their families. We know social media has a tremendous effect on the brain, especially for young children. In this settlement, social media platforms will be required to add several features to ensure children are better protected online while also giving parents more oversight into how young Hoosiers are using social media. This settlement is a great first step, and I hope other online companies follow suit. I will continue working hard to maintain protecting minors from online harm in Indiana."
